As we slowly acclimate to this new normal, now is the perfect time to learn how to sanitize and disinfect every area of your life. While you may feel confident cleaning your home and work area, do you know how to safely disinfect your car? Continue reading for a step-by-step tutorial on how to sanitize your car.

How to Sanitize Your Car

Step 1: Vacuum

Dust, dirt, and pollen can embed itself in the carpet and upholstery of your car over time. Movement stirs up these particles sending allergens and pollutants into the air which lowers the breathing quality in the cabin. Protect your lungs by vacuuming up these particles and giving your car a clean, fresh scent. Be sure to wear a dust mask or face covering as you clean so that you don’t inhale any particles that go airborne.

Step 2: Disinfect

There is a reason why bleach and Clorox wipes are hard to come by these days, and that’s because they are so effective at disinfecting contaminated surfaces. For your car, however, these products can do more damage than good.

Bleach will eat away at the surfaces of your car, especially soft, organic materials like leather. Isopropyl alcohol at a concentration of 70% or more is what is used by car manufacturers to disinfect their cars which is effective in removing any contaminants you may be worried about. And rather than using paper towels which can be abrasive, use a clean, soft terry cloth instead.

Step 3: Change the Filters

It’s easy to overlook the effectiveness of the air filters in keeping your cabin air clean and free from allergens. Keep the dust, pollutants, and allergens outside by replacing the air filters. Doing so will ensure that only clean air circulates through your cabin making it easier for you and your passengers to breathe.
